About a year ago he started testing the concept and found that people were eager to get a group together, dress up in 1920s attire and hit the road. It’s bring-your-own alcohol, but a bartender who will curate a bar menu can be provided for an additional fee. With a wine collection that now numbers more then 500,000 bottles Bern’s Steakhouse is the owner of the largest restaurant wine collection in the entire country. The warehouse that stores these wines is located across from the entrance to the restaurant across West Marjory Ave (easily identifiable from the colorful mural on the west side of the building). Some of their older wine selections are extremely rare and unique to find on a wine list anywhere in the world. Deep dive into their offerings both domestically and internationally – there are numerous notables from this list including a well-priced selection of European produced Rieslings. Our dining room dress code is business casual to semi-formal. If you are dressed in more relaxed attire, you may be seated in our lounge area instead of the main dining rooms.

The experience and food was truly something we have never encountered before. We later learned that their waiters train for one year working at almost every station in the restaurant.
One of the best steakhouses in America is right here in Tampa Bay, according to Gayot. We ordered the Macadamia Nut Sundae and Chocolate Peanut Butter Truffle recommended by our waiter. The Macadamia Nut Sundae was actually created by food scientists which was an interesting tidbit. I don't think we've ever tried a dish that was curated by scientists! They were both divine but I think we all agreed the that the sundae was the winner.
We ordered the crab cakes as an appetizer but wish we hadn't because we were a little full by the time the steaks came out. Bern's Steak House is a local favorite and has been around since 1956. I know you are probably thinking this is going to be a typical steakhouse restaurant review but let me reassure you that it is more than just a steakhouse. Even I had my doubts but was blown away by the meal and the entire experience. All Bern’s waiters are highly trained and very competent servers, however if you have a favorite, please make your request for this waiter when you make your reservation by phone. We will note it in your reservation and do our best to seat you at a table in their section.
It looks like a mash-up of sets from True Blood and Penny Dreadful with bonus inspiration from Amsterdam’s Red Light district. Reading up on this place after my meal, I understood why its chroniclers have favored words like "rococo" and "bordello." After my years of frequenting nightclubs, dive bars and restaurant bars, niche experiences like the one at Bar Chica are a welcome alternative. There are a couple of strong options across the Tampa Bay area right now, bars that don’t feel gimmicky but do emphasize a certain quiet, intimate, speakeasy vibe. But once inside Bar Chica, the vibe couldn’t have been more warm and inviting.

TAMPA, FL — The lifestyle website, Gayot, has released its annual ranking of the best steak houses in the country and, as in previous years, the list features Bern's Steak House in Tampa. If your requested date or time is not available, you are welcome to check back periodically either online or by phone, however due to the volume of requests, we do not have a call back/waiting list. After hours of eating and drinking, settling into a nook one among the room’s woozy lighting felt trippy and out of time, like a tiki-themed David Lynch movie filmed in an alternate universe. It was rich just to sit and listen and people-watch. As delightful as they were, I could barely muster bites of banana cream pie and macadamia ice cream. Somehow I managed my glass of 1977 D’Oliveiras Bual Madeira much more successfully.

For more details on our dress code, please click here. Come a few minutes before 430pm for their soft opening and hopefully catch a seat at the bar or a few tables near the bar. On the culinary side – known for their wide variety of steaks including their prime beef which they dry-age. Valet parking available or if space available, limited parking is located on nearby streets. These elements have combined since 1956 to provide our guests with a unique culinary experience.
We offer oysters, escargot, 16 different caviars and many other mouth-watering selections. In the front, Bodega is the go-to for Cuban food and fresh juices in St. Petersburg’s Edge District. But peek around a barn-style door in the back and find Bar Chica. Try one of the signature cocktails, like the Florida Sour, concocted of Whistle Pig Whiskey, “Piggyback” 6-year rye, orange, lemon, rosemary simple syrup and a red wine float. If you have already secured your dinner reservation, there is no need to call the restaurant to reserve a dessert room table, one has already been secured for you.
If you're in Tampa, this is definitely a reservation you'll want to make and don't skip the dessert room. Bern’s can put a candle in the dessert of the person celebrating while in the Harry Waugh Dessert Room. Please make sure to notate the occasion when making your reservation or let your dessert room server know the occasion the evening you dine with us. Only still photos are permitted while dining at Bern’s. Videos are not allowed in the dining rooms or any portion of the tour.
We really enjoyed the Caesar Salad prepared from scratch at our table (extra cost if you choose not to have the salad that comes with the entrees), which was the best caesar salad we've ever had. It was fresh and packed with flavor and had a touch of saltiness from the anchovies. It also paired nicely with the complimentary bread we received that was a bit crunchy like croutons. Florida has quite a few iconic, landmark restaurants that have withstood the test of time, like the famed Columbia restaurant, for instance. Dining at these places not only provides you with a meal that has been perfected over the years but also a place that is riddled with history. We have one particular steakhouse that fits perfectly, making it a treasure and also a delicious meal that will be most memorable.

The waiter will cut and prepare the steak for you at the table as well. Bern was a shrewd tinkerer who nurtured obsessions and found ways to incorporate his fixations into the steakhouse — particularly when it came to wine. He purchased so many cases that he eventually bought warehouse space in the neighborhood for storage.
Novikas said many people prefer to just stay on the bus and party. If you plan on visiting on a weekend at prime time, make sure to reserve a table a month in advance. I called the restaurant almost three weeks in advance to make a reservation and the earliest available time they had was 9PM on a weekend. They informed me that in order to get a table at a decent time at their restaurant, I would have to book at least one month in advance. Bern’s exists in its own west Florida dimension, an icon of eccentricity and excellence. They started their steakhouse with Bern overseeing the kitchen and Gert running the floor.
It's a very intimate dining experience and it doesn't stop there. We were given a large menu (basically a book) with nearly 50 dessert choices and more than 1,000 dessert wines and spirits to choose from. Be prepared to reserve 3-4 hours of your time for this dining experience if you are going to the dessert room (and a Bern's experience is not complete without ending the night in the dessert room). We had reservations at 9PM and did not leave Bern's until 1AM. Bern's Steak House takes their last reservation at 10PM on the weekdays and 11PM on the weekends but they will stay open until the very last customer has fully enjoyed the entire Bern's experience. They are trimmed and cut after you order, and broiled over real charcoal.

The in-house cellar actually isn't able to house all of their wines, so they have a second storage unit off their premises down the street. The guide gave us a tour of their oldest to most expensive wines and some other interesting tidbits like how they keep a backup generator just in case the electricity goes out during hurricane season.
The steakhouse’s mutability, coupled with our everlasting blood lust for charred beef, means the genre will never fade. St. Petersburg-based Star Trolley filled a void when it started in 2021, providing festive transportation for weddings. Owner Richard Novikas started it after he inherited a fleet of trolleys and busses from his family’s business in New Jersey. Once business started booming, Novikas considered a plan for his 44-passenger transit bus. Inspired by a trip to The Ringling Museum in Sarasota where he saw an antique circus train car, he turned it into a 1920s speakeasy. Novikas did all the work himself, gutting the bus and building out the bar and seating.
If you're a fan of French Onion Soup, you will really enjoy this one. We also appreciated that they didn't present a huge bowl of the soup to fill us up before the steaks came out. The worst thing you can do is fill yourself up with all the appetizers before the main course.
These steaks are just as good (or even better) as similar high-end steakhouses like Ruth's Chris. However, unlike the other high-end chain steakhouses, you don't have to order à la carte. All entrees come with French Onion soup, onion rings, a choice of various salads, vegetables of the day, and a loaded baked potato. Words such as iconic and legendary are often used to describe this historical and storied establishment.
